Float Crush is a new type of bitcrusher exploiting the nature of the floating point unit. It offers something the regular bitcrusher can’t; a dual flavor distortion.

What does Float Crush do?
A floating point unit has three important segments to it, the sign, the exponent, and the mantissa. A normal 32-bit float uses 23 bits for it’s mantissa values and 7 bits for it’s exponent.

What Float Crush does is applies quantization to the exponent and mantissa range of bits, the same quantization a normal bitcrusher would. But the difference is this creates a multi-staged effect, where quantizing the mantissa range brings a soft, airy texture, and the exponent range which can completely ‘rearrange’ the sound.

There’s only a few presets but try it out for yourself. When adjusting the exponent effect, you might notice the signal gets softer, if that happens use the Pre-Gain control to compensate.

Reception is a strange little toy for screwing with your audio,
it does a good job at destroying what its fed…works great on beats!

-COLOR & TINT: these control the sound as well as the color on the sceen,
when both controls are at zero, they produce a phaser/flanger effect.
The higer up they go, the wierder the effect, almost like a buffer/delay.
Use these subtley for strange beat displacements. The slider to the left
controls the amt of this effect as well as mixing the two delays.

-CONTRAST & BIT: these are the lo-fi controls.

-BRIGHT:controls the filter cutoff.

-POWER: the power button at the top left turns the screen and the effect off.

-NOISE: when this button is turned on, it produces a modulated white noise
(All of the bottm controls can manipulate the noise, as well as the ring mod)

-RING MOD: this button turns on a ring modulator,
the slider to the right controls the pitch of the effect.

There is also a button with a warning label,
this can cause severe damage to your television set.

By mixing the pitch shifted signal with the original signal via the dry/wet control, basic detuning, octaving and harmonizing effects are also possible. This shifter is based on a delayline with two crossfaded read pointers. PWMDrive is a saturator/softclipper/waveshaper with offset. I came up with the idea when reading about tube-amplifiers where the distorsion wasn’t symmetrical around zero.
I called it PWMDrive since, when maxed out, it can produce sounds similar to a pulse-width-modulated square wave.
The waveshaping function is out = in/(1+in)). Actually its like that on positive x, and symmetrical around zero) I’m not sure if this is similar to a “real” tube, but it sounds great, if you have any suggestions on different shape-functions, that have similar (or less) cost, please let me know.

An sweet-sounding oversampling option is provided, mainly meant to be used at mixdown-time, since it’s rather expensive.

The steps performed are:

Measure the amplitude
DC-Offset signal depending on amplitude (lfo-controlled)
Gain
SoftClip
HiPass (to remove dc)

Firegain is a 3-band (soft-)clipper / shaper. It is similar to a “harmonic exciter”.

1. Divide the signal into three frequency bands using box-filters.
2. Applies soft clipping to each of the bands.
3. Recombine the signals to create a final signal.

It introduces a small (a few samples) delay depending on the lower frequency.

The oversampler “hosts” another VST plugin, and oversamples it by 2. Because of this, aliasing has twice the frequency range to unfold, which means that the aliasing that enters back into the audible domain is much less, and upon downsampling, the upper range (containing only aliasing) is discarded. This results in audibly reduced aliasing.
