Float Crush is a new type of bitcrusher exploiting the nature of the floating point unit. It offers something the regular bitcrusher can’t; a dual flavor distortion.

What does Float Crush do?
A floating point unit has three important segments to it, the sign, the exponent, and the mantissa. A normal 32-bit float uses 23 bits for it’s mantissa values and 7 bits for it’s exponent.

What Float Crush does is applies quantization to the exponent and mantissa range of bits, the same quantization a normal bitcrusher would. But the difference is this creates a multi-staged effect, where quantizing the mantissa range brings a soft, airy texture, and the exponent range which can completely ‘rearrange’ the sound.

There’s only a few presets but try it out for yourself. When adjusting the exponent effect, you might notice the signal gets softer, if that happens use the Pre-Gain control to compensate.

By mixing the pitch shifted signal with the original signal via the dry/wet control, basic detuning, octaving and harmonizing effects are also possible. Let’s assume that you have a stereo track in which an acoustic guitar is the only instrument in the left channel, and a voice is the only signal in the right. If you pan all left, you might intuitively think that the singer will gradually be heard in the left channel. But with typical hardware and software panning solutions, this is not so!

Instead, the singer’s voice is merely lowered until it cannot be heard at all. You may find yourself with a stereo track in which you want to hear all of the instruments or sounds, but simply want to change the entire track’s relative stereo position.

Returning to the above example, if you use Fondleo to pan all left, the singer’s voice will gradually blend into the left as it is faded out from the right. The end result: your entire stereo track ends in the left channel– guitar and voice.

The rythmic, choppy, buffered and tempo sync output is especially pleasing on drums, but works for most instruments and vocals too. It has no controls, only a red LED display that runs from 000 to 099, each number would appear to change the algorythymic undertones that affect the things and stuff inside differently. Some of these so-called ‘programs’ appear to loop the effect, others don’t. Sometimes the things are faster and the stuff slower, othertimes it’s the opposite.

The top puck controls the level of each effect bank, the bottom puck modulates any 4 of 13 parameters within the effect banks. moot is a flexible audio mute plugin with a number of additional features. The mute switch (Hit Me) can be assigned to a single midi keyboard key and act in 3 ways
- as a latch (one press mute, release stays muted, next press unmute, release stays unmuted)

- in invert mode (hold down to play audio, release to mute)

The minimum and maximum volume can be set so that as well as muting, moot can act as a switch between a high and low volume

boost is a dual-band, parallel compression effect that enhances your audio by boosting the lows and highs whilst still letting some of the original signal through to get a nice blend. Increase the gain to get more compression, then tweak the low and high band to suit the sound you want. The boost knob increases the mix of compressed audio with the dry signal.
